Why Bernie vs Hillary Matters More Than People Thinkby Benjamin StudebakerLately the internet has become full of arguments about the merits and demerits of Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been discussing and pondering all the various views about this, and I’m increasingly of the opinion that most of the people engaging in this debate don’t really understand what is at stake in the democratic primary. This is in part because many Americans don’t really understand the history of American left wing politics and don’t think about policy issues in a holistic, structural way. So in this post, I want to really dig into what the difference is between Bernie and Hillary and why that difference is extremely important.
Why Bernie Sanders is More Electable Than People Thinkby Benjamin StudebakerA few days ago, I wrote a popular post about the ideological differences between Bernie Sanders, the egalitarian committed to shrinking the financial sector and boosting consumption by raising wages, and Hillary Clinton, the neoliberal committed to protecting the interests of finance capital. I explained the history of the Democratic Party and how it came to be captured by neoliberalism–the same economic ideology espoused by Ronald Reagan and many of his successors in the Republican Party. Many people found that this clarified the differences between Bernie and Hillary for them. However some people expressed concern that even though they think Bernie’s ideology is more desirable, he may still nonetheless be unable to beat a republican in a general election. A republican victory would be awful for the left–even a neoliberal democrat is still noticeably to the left of a neoliberal republican, especially on issues like climate change or LGBT rights. However, I think there are good reasons to think that Bernie is at least as electable as Hillary, and possibly significantly more so.
These Charts Show Why Bernie Wants to Make America More Like EuropeSo just where is the surprise? Why should we be amazed that young voters think it would be not be so bad if America were more like Denmark, Finland or the Netherlands? In a recent interview, George Stephanopoulos cautioned Sanders that Republicans were likely to jump all over him for saying the U.S. should be more like Scandinavia."That's right. And what's wrong with that?" Sanders replied. "What's wrong when you have more income and wealth equality? What's wrong when they have a stronger middle class in many ways than we do, higher minimum wage than we do and they are stronger on the environment than we do?"
Here is a chart that gives the big picture. The horizontal axis shows gross domestic product per capita. (GDP here is measured at purchasing power parity to remove distortions caused by over- or undervalued exchange rates.) The vertical axis shows a measure of human well-being called the Social Progress Index. Unlike some other broad indexes of human welfare, the SPI does not explicitly include income, wealth or GDP. Instead, it regards them as "inputs" that support the production of "outputs" like health, security and personal freedoms.
Then what does all this-the yacht, the bronze tower, the casinos-really mean to you? Props for the show. And what is the show? The show is "Trump" and it has sold out performances everywhere. I've had fun doing it and will continue to have fun, and I think most people enjoy it.... Calvin Klein, who doesn't have a fraction of your wealth, has often said he feels guilty about his. Do you? It's not overriding, but I do have it. You don't sound guilty at all. I do have a feeling of guilt. I'm living well and like it, I know that many other people don't live particularly well. I do have a social consciousness. I'm setting up a foundation; I give a lot of money away and I think people respect that. The fact that I built this large company by myself working people respect that; but the people who are at high levels don't like it. They'd like it for themselves. ... You lost some valued employees in a recent helicopter crash. Yes. I lost not only brilliant, key players in my company but true friends and I couldn't believe it. At first, I was shocked, called their wives, just kept functioning .... My own sense of optimism and life was greatly diminished. I never realized how deaths outside the family could have such a profound effect on me. What did you think when the shock wore off? [Pauses] It's a tragic waste. I was also angry in that it was an event that I didn’t want to happen. Here was this press conference, a very mediocre event announcing a minor boxing match. I told these guys that they didn't need to go, but they wanted to be there … They gave their lives for something so unimportant. It’s been a rough time.... What satisfaction, exactly, do you get out of doing a deal? I love the creative process. I do what I do out of pure enjoyment. Hopefully, nobody does it better. There's a beauty to making a great deal. It's my canvas. And I like painting it. I like the challenge and tell the story of the coal miner's son. The coal miner gets black-lung disease, his son gets it, then his son. If I had been the son of a coal miner, I would have left the damn mines. But most people don't have the imagination-or whatever-to leave their mine. They don’t have "it." Which is? "It" is an ability to become an entrepreneur, a great athlete, a great writer. You're either born with it or you're not. Ability can be honed, perfected or neglected. The day Jack Nicklaus came into this world, he had more innate ability to play golf than anybody else. ... You obviously have a lot of self-confidence. How do you use that in a business deal? I believe in positive thinking, but I also believe in the power of negative thinking. You should prepare for the worst. If I'm doing a deal, I want to know how bad it's going to be if everything doesn't work rather than how good it's going to be. I have a positive outlook, but I'm unfortunately also quite cynical. So if all the negatives happened, what would my strategy be? Would I want to be in that position? If I don't, I don't do the deal. My attitude is to focus on the down side because the up side will always take care of itself. ... Your older brother, Fred, who died from heart failure brought on by acute alcoholism, had a more difficult time with him, didn't he? Take one environment and it will work completely differently on different children. Our family environment, the competitiveness, was a negative for Fred. It wasn't easy for him being cast in a very tough environment, and I think it played havoc on him. I was very close to him and it was very sad when he died . . . toughest situation I've had ... What did you learn from his experience? [Pauses] Nobody has ever asked me that. But his death affected everything that has come after it. ... I think constantly that I never really gave him thanks for it. He was the first Trump boy out there, and I subconsciously watched his moves. And the lesson? I saw people really taking advantage of Fred and the lesson I learned was always to keep up my guard one hundred percent, whereas he didn't. He didn't feel that there was really reason for that, which is a fatal mistake in life. People are too trusting. I'm a very untrusting guy. I study people all the time, automatically; it's my way of life, for better or worse. Why? I am very skeptical about people; that's self-preservation at work. I believe that, unfortunately, people are out for themselves. At this point, it's to many people’s advantage to like me. Would the phone stop ringing, would these people kissing ass disappear if things were not going well? I enjoy testing friendship .... Everything in life to me is a psychological game, a series of challenges you either meet or don't. I am always testing people who work for me. How? I will send people around to my buyers to test their honesty by offering them trips and other things. I've been surprised that some people least likely to accept a trip from a contractor did and some of the most likely did not. You can never tell until you test; the human species is interesting in that way. So to me, friendship can be really tested only in bad times. I instinctively mistrust many people. It is not a negative in my life but a positive. Playboy wouldn't be talking to me today if I weren't a cynic. So I learned that from Fred, and I owe him a lot. . . . He could have ultimately been a happy guy, but things just went the unhappy way. ... How large a role does pure ego play in your deal making and enjoyment of publicity? Every successful person has a very large ego. Every successful person? Mother Teresa? Jesus Christ? Far greater egos than you will ever understand. And the Pope? Absolutely. Nothing wrong with ego. People need ego, whole nations need ego.... We've talked about building low income housing; what have you done about rhat in other locations? I did that during the years I worked with my father; I did build both low-income housing and housing for the elderly. And now I'm going to be building more of it. The problem is, that stuff never gets written about. ... A favorite word of yours, tough. How do you define it? Tough is being mentally capable of winning battles against an opponent and doing it with a smile. Tough is winning systematically. Sometimes you sound like a Presidential candidate stirring up the voters. I don't want the Presidency. I'm going to help a lot of people with my foundation-and for me, the grass isn't always greener. But if the grass ever did look greener, which political party do you think you'd be more comfortable with? Well, if I ever ran for office, I'd do better as a Democrat than as a Republican-and that's not because I'd be more Republican-and that's not because I'd be more liberal, because I'm conservative. But the working guy would elect me. He likes me.... What would be some of President Trump's longer-term views of the future? I think of the future, but I refuse to paint it. Anything can happen. But I often think of nuclear war. Nuclear war? I've always thought about the issue of nuclear war; it's a very important element in my thought process. It's the ultimate, the ultimate catastrophe, the biggest problem this world has, and nobody's focusing on the nuts and bolts of it. It's a little like sickness. People don't believe they’re going to get sick until they do. Nobody wants to talk about it. I believe the greatest of all stupidities is people's believing it will never happen, because everybody knows how destructive it will be, so nobody uses weapons. What bullshit. Does any of that fuzzy thinking exist around the Trump office? On a much lower level, I would never hire anybody who thinks that way, because he has absolutely no common sense. He's living in a world of make-believe. It’s like thinking the Titanic can't sink. Too many countries have nuclear weapons; nobody knows where they're all pointed, what button it takes to launch them. The bomb Harry Truman dropped on Hiroshima was a toy next to today's. We have thousands of weapons pointed at us and nobody even knows if they're going to go in the right direction. They've never really been tested. These jerks in charge don't know how to paint a wall, and we’re relying on them to shoot nuclear missiles to Moscow. What happens if they don't go there? What happens if our computer systems aren't working? Nobody knows if this equipment works, and I've seen numerous reports lately stating that the probability is they don't work. It's a total mess. ... You categorically don't want to be President? I don't want to be President. I’m one hundred percent sure. I'd change my mind only if I saw this country continue to go down the tubes. ...(sobre el alcalde de Nueva York) He could think only about his own ass-not the city's. That was dumb: The only one who didn't know his administration was crumbling around him was him. Power corrupts. You probably have more power than Koch did as mayor. And you're getting more of it all the time. How about power's corrupting you? I think power sometimes corrupts-“sometimes" has to be added.... But you do enjoy flirtations? I think any man enjoys flirtations, and if he said he didn't, he'd be lying or he'd be a politician trying to get the extra four votes. I think everybody likes knowing he's well responded to. Especially as you get into certain strata where there is an ego involved and a high level of success, it's important. People really like the idea that other people respond well to them. ... You're involved in so many activities, deals, promotions-in the deep of the night, after the reporters all leave your conferences, are you ever satisfied with what you've accomplished? I'm too superstitious to be satisfied. I don't dwell on the past. People who do that go right down the tubes. I'm never self-satisfied. Life is what you do while you're waiting to die. You know, it is all a rather sad situation. Life? Or death? Both. We're here and we live our sixty, seventy or eighty years and we’re gone. You win, you win, and in the end, it doesn't mean a hell of a lot. But it is something to do-to keep you interested. ... I truly believe that someone successful is never really happy, because dissatisfaction is what drives him. I've never met a successful person who wasn't neurotic. It's not a terrible thing ... it's controlled neuroses. What do you mean? Controlled neuroses means having a tremendous energy level, an abundance of discontent that often isn't visible.... You've always said that you earned, not inherited, your empire, that adversity and uphill struggles made you stronger. What kind of adversity can your children experience? I'm a strong believer in genes, that my kids can be brought up without adversity and respond well if they have the genes. I have a friend who is extraordinarily smart. But he never became successful, because he couldn't take pressure. He was buying a home and it was literally killing him-a man of forty with an l.Q. of probably a hundred and ninety. ... What about the stock market? It's a crap shoot. Real estate is something solid. It's brick, mortar. ... About your own toughness... Well, as I said, I study people and in every negotiation, I weigh how tough I should appear. I can be a killer and a nice guy. You have to be everything. You have to be strong. You have to be sweet. You have to be ruthless. And I don't think any of it can be learned. Either you have it or you don't. And that is why most kids can get straight As in school but fail in life. Is there a master plan to your deal making or is it all improvisational? It's much more improvisational than people might think.
The Trump No One Knows Kimball Corson 03/06/2016, Pago Pago, American Samoa Trump's pronouncements on sundry policy issues are not to be believed and should not be. To this point and perhaps a bit beyond, his statements have have been made to evoke responses from us so he can better read his audiences. He wants to see who reacts how. The readings are various from "Right On" to "Trump is Hitler." All tip their hand. All to inform Trump how to play us collectively. We stand revealed before him, most all of us. Trump has been after the lay of the land. We have reacted pretty much predictably. Liberal indignation. Conservative reactionariness. Befuddlement from competitors for the nomination. The surprise, I am sure, even to Trump, is the huge roar of approval from middle America over his worst and most vile comments and over his hostility toward the political establishment. America is mad and wants the establishment out and Trump in. That is why there is so much "Stop Trump" talk among GOP officials. Trump has yet to explain himself or take sensible positions which are realistic. He has not entirely finished playing with and reading us. Almost, but not quite. The transition will occur slowly and as the political process gets down to the short strokes. We will then get tailored responses to his readings and he will become a more generally accepted and viable candidate. Trump has been badly misjudged.
Why Trump Haters Really Hate Trump It’s not the hair. Or the bad manners. Or the “beautiful” wall he says he’ll build. There’s a different, more subtle reason why the Republican establishment, donor class, political operatives, and the news media in general hate Donald Trump. The reason can be found in a New York Times best selling business book, Stacking The Deck, by Wharton professor David Pottruck. Pottruck, the Charles Schwab CEO who took the genial brokerage house online and into the big time, says that organizations hate change. Hate it with a PASSION! That’s because when there’s a new way of doing things, a new way of solving problems, a new way of relating to everything, they feel threatened as a deep personal-loss. Change renders meaningless the value of their hard-won experience and know-how. In politics, it may means family member lose their cushy jobs and perks. Student loans of government employees get automatically paid off by government – TAX FREE. Those in government have done things one way forever. Change is NOT FAIR to them Everything they have done to line their pockets is threatened. The rules of the game may no longer apply. So they dig in their heels and will do whatever it takes to resist change. They resist perpetually until forced otherwise. They subvert any process that would lead to change. Until they lose, it becomes open warfare against the people to sustain the establishment and its perks. And so it is with Donald Trump. Like him or not, he has completely rewritten the rules of Presidential politics. He bypasses the media, taking his message, raw and unfiltered, to the millions of people who follow him on Twitter. The party establishment went from underestimating him and laughing at him to fearing him breaking out in night sweats. They fear all power and their relevance will vanish into thing air. Donors gave Jeb Bush $120 million and he came in dead last. The money, like Jeb, is gone and it could not save their fiefdom. Now wealthy donors have a choice. Oppose Trump and he wins and they are out in the cold. Understand there is a change in the wind and shift sides to the people. How ironic. It took a billionaire to neuter the billionaire donor class. Most of the media hates Trump to the core and dislike the fact they are no longer able to play kingmaker losing their power fearing they will be irrelevant with the internet displacing them. The political class have lost the power to rule behind the curtain from paid operatives and cronies who cannot transition to the new world where the old rules of campaigning don’t apply. Trump has spent more on hats than he has on polls so the pollsters also have lost their importance. Diplomats worldwide are running scared because Trump will renegotiate everything from a business standpoint that cannot be bought like Hillary & her foundation. The handwringing, the dire predictions of doom, and the wailing and gnashing of teeth have little to do with Donald’s positions, but their loss of power. They complain Trump is bringing in new voters who are not Republican. And this is bad? The Trump threat isn’t to the Constitution, to America’s standing in the world, or even to Republican Congressional candidates, it is to the establishment. If you think Trump’s supporters are angry about the way the government and the business world colluded, you are right. The establishment fails to appreciate the anger. They’re just furious. Even if Trump fails to win, there will be more in the wings. He is inspiring a change and he doesn’t even understand how profound.
This is the video evidence that shows how ruthless government employees have become against the people. This is the outright murder of Robert “LaVoy” Finicum. Nobody shot at the police. Yet, they murdered LaVoy and kept shooting at the people in the car in an attempt to kill them all. This is an international outrage and would be a war crime by any other standard by which they demand soldiers be prosecuted on with such evidence. If this is the police then we are all just enemy. They deserve life in prison and to protect these crop, is an invitation to ALL police to just do whatever they like. Why does Obama not demand that guns be taken away from police who just use them at will recklessly? You are far more likely to be killed by police than by a terrorist. They know they can kill you without any charges. So they have no restraint and shoot to kill anyone without remorse.LaVoy made the fatal mistake that he still believed in the system. He states clearly you will have his blood on their hands as if he believed that would bother them. That is the key point here. These types of people view us as the hated enemy. They will slap each other’s hands in a high-five fashion like winning a touch-down when massacring unarmed citizens as if we are deer on a hunt. We have crossed the point of no return. They no longer see us as the people they are sworn to protect. It is now them against us and any confrontation gives them the right to murder us unarmed. This is a sad statement for it is becoming far more common like a disease spreading among the police. A friend’s daughter wanted to become a law enforcement officer. He has shown her many of these cases. She has changed her mind for she no longer wants to be associated with this type of conduct. The eight Los Angeles police officers opened fire on two women in a blue SUV because they were looking for someone driving such a vehicle who killed a cop. They never bothered to see if it was even the suspect. They shot at two women over 100 times. They will not lose their jobs. Of course not. They won’t even be suspended. They’ll just get some additional training so next time they can kill innocent people at least on the first shot instead of wasting 103.And they wonder why people are angry and fed up with the establishment? Come on. Refusing to prosecute any police emboldens them all and that is scary for they become an occupying force as if we lost the war and are invaded. This is exactly what inspired the American Revolution. Jefferson stated it in the Declaration of Independence.:“For Protecting them, by a mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on inhabitants of these states.”One primary incident was the “Boston Massacre” which was the killing of 5 colonial individuals and wounding six by British troops. The troops were sent over to control the rebellions that were caused by the Townshend Acts. They opened fire exactly as you see in this video against unarmed citizens. We suffer the very same injury today and they are NEVER prosecuted. The king is dead, long live the unelected bureaucracy.
The war is going to be between the FBI, with James Comey, its director, a very smart and capable Univ. of Chicago lawyer, and the Justice Department which -- with Obama's encouragement -- might seriously try to cover-up and bury Hillary's email problems. The war might not come to pass however, because hundreds of agents know about her problems and some would leak the investigations report. Independent legal commentary would kill then Hillary and the cover up effort would blowup in Obama's face. He would then look like the rat some take him for. Comey is an absolutely straight shooter and fiercely independent. He is serious about his responsibilities. He will let the chips fall where the law and facts say they should. Politics will be squeezed out of it. The truth is Hillary is in serious trouble with her emails problem. Bob Woodward of the Washington Post and Watergate fame says her problem rivals Watergate in the scope of its seriousness. I tend to agree from all I know, including the fact much top secret SAP information has been found on her private, non official, servers. Hillary is in trouble. Even Obama has backed away from declarations about how she is not a target or subject of the investigation. He is ducking for cover. I am sure Comey has reported to him and the Attorney General since the Press Secretary earlier on took his public position the FBI is not investigating Hillary. That is simply so much BS and is wholly incredible. Mishandling, receiving and transmitting large volumes of classified information, whether marked as such then or later, is a very serious matter. The character of the information is what makes it classified, not whether it is marked as such. Few who haven't had clearances realize this. Much information relating to foreign governments is "born classified," that us deem classified upon receipt, again, whether marked or not. The public's ignorance about these matters is considerable. Hillary is in serious trouble, independently of her run for office.
