China said it was ready for any “unexpected shocks”, ahead of US President Donald Trump imposing higher tariffs on the world’s second-biggest economy.

Premier Li Qiang, responsible for the Chinese economy under leader Xi Jinping, told foreign business leaders gathered in Beijing on Sunday that uncertainty and instability were rising, but China would choose the “correct path” of globalisation and multilateralism. 

“We have preparations for possible unexpected shocks, which of course mainly come from external sources,” Li said. 

And in a thinly veiled swipe at what Beijing sees as western protectionism, Li urged attendees at the China Development Forum to be “staunch defenders” of globalisation and “resist unilateralism”.

The US is expected to impose additional levies on imports from China on April 2, when it unveils “reciprocal tariffs” on countries around the world.

Since taking office, Trump has already slapped 20 per cent tariffs on goods from China, in a move the White House says is designed to pressure Beijing to crack down harder on companies that make the ingredients for fentanyl, a sometimes deadly synthetic opioid that has triggered an epidemic of drug use in the US.

The cautionary tone from the Chinese premier comes as Beijing tries to improve consumer and investor sentiment, while also preparing potential retaliatory measures against future US tariffs and sanctions.

While Xi’s administration was caught off-guard by Trump’s 2016 election victory, Beijing is now armed with a quiver of potential countermeasures to new US pressure. They include curbing American access to supply chains for strategic minerals and resources.

Amid calls from economists for Beijing to be bolder in addressing slowing economic growth, Xi’s government is pivoting towards more investment in cutting-edge technology and manufacturing, in part to steel itself for a more hostile geopolitical environment.

There have been very few top-level talks between the US and China since Trump took office, barring one phone call between the president and President Xi Jinping. 

Trump last week said Xi would come to the US in the “not too distant future”, but people familiar with the conversations in Washington and Beijing said there had been no discussion about Xi travelling to America.

Later on Sunday, Li is expected to meet Steve Daines, a Republican senator from Montana who is very close to Trump. Daines, who previously worked in China on business, on Saturday met vice premier He Lifeng, in a rare meeting between a senior American lawmaker and top Chinese official. 

Daines’ office said he used his meeting with He to reiterate Trump’s call for China to halt the flow of chemicals used to make fentanyl. It added that the senator had “expressed hope that further high-level talks between the United States and China will take place in the near future”.

Earlier this month the State Council, China’s cabinet, released a new white paper outlining Beijing’s “rigorous control” over fentanyl-related substances and precursor chemicals. State media also pushed back on the pressure from Washington, saying the US had “shifted the blame” for its drugs problem “rather than taking responsibility itself”.

NASA Considers Eliminating Its Headquarters in Washington D.C.

NASA is considering "closing its headquarters and scattering responsibilities among the states," reports Politico, citing two people familiar with the plan. "The proposal could affect up to 2,500 jobs and redistribute critical functions, including who manages space exploration and organizes major science missions."

While much of the day-to-day work occurs at NASA's 10 centers, the Washington office plays a strategic role in lobbying for the agency's priorities in Congress, ensuring the White House supports its agenda and partnering with foreign countries on critical space projects. Some of the headquarter's offices might remain in Washington, the people said, but it's not clear which ones those would be or who would keep their jobs...

One of the biggest fallouts is the damage it could do to coordination among NASA leadership on pressing issues... It would also limit cooperation with international partners on space, which is often done through embassies in Washington. NASA works with foreign partners on a range of projects, including the International Space Station and returning to the moon. The European Space Agency, for example, plans to provide modules for Gateway, a lunar space station that is central to NASA's Artemis program to land American astronauts back on the moon... The agency also helps coordinate support from foreign nations for the Artemis accords, which set goals for transparency and data sharing — and help create a level of trust in an unregulated part of the universe.

But the reallocation could have some benefits. Such a move would bring headquarters employees closer to the processes they manage. And it would give legislative liaison staff a chance to interact with lawmakers in their districts. "You're probably getting a lot more time with [lawmakers] at the local center or hosting events in the state or district," said Tom Culligan, a longtime space lobbyist,, the space industry lobbyist.

Los abusos de algunas agencias inmobiliarias agudizan la ya descarnada crisis de la vivienda

Las asociaciones de consumidores denuncian el modelo de gestión agresiva y, en ocasiones ilegal, con el que operan algunas empresas en un momento tan crítico como el actual

Era octubre de 2024. Celia Deus, de 35 años, y otras dos amigas buscaban un piso de alquiler en Madrid. “Encontramos uno que nos gustó mucho por 1.300 euros en Idealista y contactamos con una agencia de Carabanchel que tiene muchas franquicias. Exigían el mes de alquiler, un mes de fianza y un mes de honorarios de agencia, aunque lo llamaban gastos de gestión”. Ellas sabían que la ley por el derecho a la vivienda prohíbe desde mayo de 2023 el cobro al inquilino, pero pagaron con la idea de reclamar después a través del Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid. Tras varios intentos, la agencia citó a las tres chicas en su oficina. “Nos entregaron un sobre con el dinero en efectivo y nos hicieron firmar un documento en el que decía que no íbamos a exponer públicamente ni ante las administraciones sus prácticas abusivas”, cuenta Deus. La joven no cree que sea un caso aislado: “Se pueden ver reflejadas muchas personas que han sufrido este tipo de abusos”.

Diversas asociaciones de consumidores denuncian que la grave crisis de la vivienda, provocada por una acuciante falta de oferta y unos precios de venta y alquiler en máximos históricos, ha sido el abono perfecto para que un puñado de inmobiliarias y agentes operen con un modelo de gestión agresiva con el fin de maximizar sus ingresos. “Las prácticas abusivas se siguen incrementando cada día. Son habituales y conocidas y, en algunos casos, incluso son fácilmente constatables a través de los portales inmobiliarios”, sostiene Eloy Gutiérrez, responsable del área de Vivienda de CECU. Pablo Pérez, portavoz del Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid, se expresa con más rotundidad: “Operan con total impunidad”.

El cobro por visitar pisos, la exigencia de dinero al cliente antes de la firma de un contrato o incluso como paso previo para que se proporcione toda la información de la casa en cuestión, las cláusulas abusivas, la obligación de abonar los honorarios de la agencia y el cobro de otras comisiones cuando no corresponde, así como las presiones para firmar todo lo que la empresa ponga encima de la mesa, incluida la hipoteca, son algunas de las prácticas cuestionadas. Todas ellas están precarizando la compra y el alquiler de viviendas.

Las posibilidades de caer en una trampa se incrementan en un momento de necesidad como el actual. “En un contexto donde una inquilina tiene que buscar 30 casas y llegar a tiempo de poder visitarlas y hacer una reserva está claro que te puedes encontrar con abusos”, expone Ileana Izverniceanu, directora de Comunicación y Relaciones Institucionales de OCU, donde el número de consultas y reclamaciones en materia de vivienda creció en 2024, al sobrepasar las 40.000, frente a las 32.373 de 2023. Aun así, no hay un incremento llamativo de reclamaciones a inmobiliarias de un año para otro.

A estas alturas, tratar con una agencia a la hora de comprar o alquilar un piso es algo casi inevitable, por lo que aumentan las posibilidades de dar con alguna manzana podrida. De acuerdo con el portal inmobiliario Fotocasa, el 43% de los propietarios ya ha contratado sus servicios, mientras que un 19% aún no lo ha hecho, pero se plantea hacerlo en el futuro.

El lodazal del alquiler

El alquiler es el gran lodazal de los abusos inmobiliarios. El más visible, por frecuente, es el cobro de los gastos de gestión inmobiliaria y de formalización del contrato, equivalente a una mensualidad, algo prohibido desde 2023. Este es el motivo por el que el Ministerio de Derechos Sociales, Consumo y Agenda 2030 está investigando a varias agencias desde octubre de 2024. Un portavoz dice no poder dar más detalles hasta ver si las pesquisas terminan o no en la apertura de un expediente sancionador. Mientras tanto, en los despachos de abogados especializados en Derecho inmobiliario las consultas sobre esta cuestión son recurrentes. “Realizamos continuos requerimientos a las agencias mediante notificación formal para que procedan a la devolución de las cantidades indebidamente cobradas al arrendatario”, dice el abogado Emilio Rojas, del despacho que lleva su nombre. Y añade: “El inquilino queda desconcertado por la inseguridad jurídica en la que se encuentra y acepta sumisamente los cargos de las agencias”. Al fin y al cabo, con lo difícil que es alquilar, este parece ser un mal menor.

La OCU denunció por este motivo a la agencia Alquiler Seguro en enero de 2024. La empresa inmobiliaria defiende que la interpretación de la organización es errónea y que “cumple plenamente con la legalidad y nunca ha realizado ningún cobro irregular ni abusivo a los inquilinos”, afirma Carlos Sánchez, responsable del área jurídica de Alquiler Seguro. Insiste en que el contrato de asistencia al inquilino por el que cobra ofrece un servicio (acceso al área personal y privada en una plataforma online personalizada) e incluye diferentes ventajas asociadas al servicio principal. “Es un servicio real, voluntario y no abusivo”, remata.

Es fácil encontrar empresas que, casi dos años después de estar en vigor la ley de vivienda, siguen cobrando honorarios al inquilino. No hace falta rascar mucho. Anuncio en Idealista. Piso en la madrileña calle de Modesto Lafuente, de 45 metros cuadrados, por el que la inmobiliaria Jogar pide 1.280 euros al mes. “Nosotros cobramos una mensualidad por toda la gestión administrativa, desde la reserva hasta la entrega del piso (elaboración del contrato, trámites con el Ivima, informes de valoración de solvencia y otros) y lo pagan entre el propietario y el inquilino al 50% cada uno”, contesta una comercial por correo.

Este pasado marzo, Facua Madrid lograba que la inmobiliaria La Casa Agency reembolsase a una arrendataria llamada María B. 1.100 euros que pagó en concepto de gastos de gestión para poder alquilar una vivienda. Esta organización ha denunciado ya a una treintena de inmobiliarias. Sus dardos han sido para Alquiler Seguro y la Agencia Negociadora del Alquiler. También para Alfa Inmobiliaria, Engel & Völkers y otras más pequeñas como Spanish Home, Next Door Bcn o Smart Inmobiliaria. La única sanción que ha trascendido hasta ahora es la multa impuesta por la comunidad autónoma andaluza a Adamas Homes, aunque “es una invitación al fraude”, advierte Rubén Sánchez, portavoz de Facua. La multa es inferior a lo ingresado ilegalmente por la empresa por alquilar un solo piso.

Sostiene Sánchez que el papel de las administraciones autonómicas está siendo “realmente lamentable y no está ayudando a que se frene el fraude”. Una opinión que comparte el abogado experto en Derecho inmobiliario Alejandro Fuentes-Lojo: “Sin un régimen sancionador que penalice estas conductas, van a continuar”. Aunque hace una salvedad con Cataluña, que acaba de aprobar multas de hasta 900.000 euros para quienes no cumplan con la regulación de los precios del alquiler o hagan un uso fraudulento del alquiler de temporada. Por su parte, José María Alfaro, presidente de la Federación de Asociaciones Inmobiliarias (FAI), defiende que los agentes que lo hacen mal son una minoría. “Ante las malas prácticas, tolerancia cero”. El sector señala a los freelance y Alfaro sostiene que para promover las buenas prácticas “se llevan a cabo acciones de formación y de divulgación” y aboga por habilitar instrumentos de control y supervisión en colaboración con las administraciones, organizaciones de usuarios, notarios y las propias agencias.

Pagar antes de firmar

El mercado del alquiler de viviendas da para mucho más. Una inquilina que pide el anonimato alerta de una práctica que se ha extendido debido al desmesurado interés que suscita cada piso que se oferta. Hay empresas que exigen todos los pagos (alquiler, fianza y garantías) por adelantado, es decir, antes de la firma del contrato y la entrega de las llaves. Estas son las condiciones que pide la agencia Savills a esta inquilina para arrendar un piso en un edificio rehabilitado en Madrid. No las ha aceptado. “Además, el contrato que te mandan de forma telemática es un borrador, no es el definitivo”, apunta. La compañía afirma, por correo electrónico, que “la comercialización de viviendas por parte de Savills, incluida la de este caso, es conforme a la legislación vigente”. Esta forma de proceder es la que también siguen en la socimi Vivenio: una comercial indica, en una llamada telefónica y tras ser preguntada por una promoción de alquiler, que primero se paga y luego se firma el contrato vía telemática. Después, “se dejan las llaves en la consejería, hay que ir a buscarlas”.

Sin embargo, la Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos (LAU), en sus artículos 36.1 y 36.5, recoge que la fianza —una mensualidad—, y en caso de que se pacte, la garantía —máximo dos mensualidades—, se podrán exigir en el momento de la celebración del contrato. “Es decir, es contrario a esta norma pedir ningún pago por adelantado de ninguna cantidad”, señalan en CECU, algo que corrobora el letrado Emilio Rojas: “En cuanto al momento del desembolso, entendemos que es a la firma del contrato, salvo que se firme un acuerdo de reserva de alquiler y se cobre el equivalente a una mensualidad por adelantado, concepto que al otorgamiento del contrato iría a fianza”. Izverniceanu insiste: “Esas garantías se piden en el momento de la firma del contrato y no antes. Sería ilegal pretender cobrar esas cantidades si se desvincula de la firma del contrato, como si fuera una exigencia previa que ni siquiera te garantiza la firma”.

Un abuso mayúsculo es el de cobrar un aval por 18 meses de renta como garantía adicional para alquilar un piso, tal y como hizo la inmobiliaria Arrendamiento10, con domicilio social en Bilbao, denunciada por Facua. La LAU limita las garantías en vivienda habitual a dos meses.

La intervención pública en el mercado del alquiler ha desencadenado un macabro juego del gato y el ratón. El ratón son las agencias y propietarios que quieren escapar de la regulación mediante artimañas, como la de recurrir, falsamente, al alquiler de temporada cuando, en muchos casos, no es más que un arrendamiento tradicional camuflado. “Cada vez es más habitual ofrecer a los inquilinos alquileres de menos de un año, como si fueran contratos temporales, a los que no se aplica la LAU con todos sus efectos”, detalla Gutiérrez. “Imponen contratos de temporada sin justificación obligando a renovaciones constantes con subidas de precio”, critica el portavoz del Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid. Y así es como las agencias pueden cobrar al inquilino el mes de agencia.

Los grandes tenedores tienen su propio lenguaje. Algunos imponen rentas bonificadas, es decir, “se pacta una renta en el contrato y se va incrementando anualmente. Es una forma de actualizar el precio de forma encubierta, algo totalmente prohibido por la LAU”, explica Rojas. Testa Homes, el gigante español de casas de alquiler, ofrece no pagar los gastos de comunidad durante los primeros tres años y el IBI durante los primeros dos años. Después, deberá hacerse cargo el inquilino, lo que supone un encarecimiento de la renta. El abogado Fuentes-Lojo explica, además, que hay mucha confusión con el pago de los gastos de comunidad. De hecho, de incluirse en el contrato, “no se le puede exigir al inquilino que pague toda la cuota, sino solo algunos gastos generales, como limpieza o portería, pero no los honorarios del administrador de fincas, por ejemplo”. Tampoco es legal repercutir el coste del seguro de impago al inquilino, apunta.

Financiar la compra

En la compraventa de vivienda, una de las inversiones más importante en la vida de una persona, cualquier mala experiencia queda grabada a fuego y eso se refleja en las denuncias que llegan a las asociaciones de consumidores y que también se publican en distintos foros de internet. Algunas de las principales acusaciones se centran en las agencias que ofrecen financiación, ya que algunos usuarios consideran que puede ser una condición para poder optar, o no, a la compra del piso. “Que el agente presione u obligue a adquirir una hipoteca con las financieras con las que trabaje la agencia es una práctica abusiva que podría ser contraria a la falta de transparencia y a la limitación de las facultades de negociación que las normas que protegen a los consumidores y usuarios otorgan a los particulares”, expone Rojas. Desde Tecnocasa, una de las cadenas señaladas en algunos foros, indican que “si bien es cierto que a todo comprador se le ofrecen los servicios de Kìron, la red de intermediarios de crédito del grupo, no es obligatorio comprar con Tecnocasa y buscar la financiación con Kìron, pues son dos servicios y dos empresas independientes”.

Lo contratos de compraventa en exclusiva son tan polémicos que han terminado en los tribunales. Desde la OCU recomiendan incluir en el contrato que no habrá comisión si el piso se vende directamente por el propietario a alguien que no haya venido por la intermediación de la agencia y que los honorarios se devenguen en el momento de la firma de la escritura de venta y no antes. “Si se fija el devengo de honorarios en el pago de una señal por el comprador es posible que la venta no termine de realizarse por algún motivo (falta de financiación, desistimiento del comprador…) y podríamos tener que pagar la comisión”, cuenta Izverniceanu. También se cometen abusos con las famosas hojas de visita, un documento que firma la persona que va a ver una casa. Recientemente los tribunales han recordado que es abusivo incluir en estos documentos penalizaciones si el visitante compra la vivienda al margen de la agencia. Por otra parte, CECU denuncia que hay agencias que “ocultan deudas o recibos pendientes de la comunidad”. Aunque ojo, porque la agencia “no tiene derecho a cobrar sus honorarios si no informa al comprador de la existencia de una derrama que grava la finca”, comenta Rojas.

Un sector liberalizado

En el año 2000, con el Gobierno de José María Aznar, se promulgó el Real Decreto 4/2000 y se liberalizó el sector inmobiliario. A partir de ese momento cualquier persona podía dedicarse a la intermediación inmobiliaria sin necesidad de titulación previa, seguro de responsabilidad civil o póliza de caución. Los abusos a los consumidores comenzaron a merodear. “Todo se ha convertido en una selva y el maligno que va con malas intenciones puede operar mucho más libremente”, se queja Ángel Martínez, presidente del Consejo General de los Colegios Oficiales de Agentes de la Propiedad Inmobiliaria de España. Martínez, que solicita un marco regulatorio para la intermediación inmobiliaria, deja claro que un API, a diferencia de un agente inmobiliario, necesita un título universitario para estar colegiado. Martínez dice ser consciente de las prácticas abusivas de algunas cadenas de franquicias: “Tienen objetivos más empresariales que profesionales”.

Por su parte, José María Alfaro, presidente de la Federación de Asociaciones Inmobiliarias (FAI), con 1.400 agencias inmobiliarias y más de 5.000 agentes, cree que “es esencial seguir trabajando en la continua formación profesional en nuestro sector, así como adaptarla a las nuevas exigencias e implementar instrumentos de control y protección para los consumidores”.

Russia and Ukraine to Hold U.S.-Mediated Talks: What to Know

American envoys will meet with Ukrainian officials on Sunday and with Russian officials the following day. The discussions are expected to focus on halting attacks on energy facilities.

The United States will hold separate talks with Russia and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia to iron out details of a possible limited cease-fire in what could be a crucial step toward a full cessation of hostilities in the war.

Russia and Ukraine both agreed this past week to temporarily halt strikes on energy infrastructure, but how and when to implement that partial truce are questions that have yet to be decided as attacks persist.

The talks — to be held in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, with American representatives mediating — are expected to focus on hammering out those details and on safety for shipping in the Black Sea. Kyiv’s delegation will first meet with U.S. mediators on Sunday, a Ukrainian official said, followed by Moscow-Washington talks on Monday.

The Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter, said Sunday’s talks would begin in the evening, Kyiv time. He added that the Ukrainian delegation might hold additional discussions with U.S. officials on Monday, depending on progress.

Steve Witkoff, whom President Trump has tapped to be his personal envoy to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, has said that the ultimate goal of the talks is a 30-day full cease-fire that would allow time for negotiations on a permanent truce.

But the path toward such a truce has been shaky. Moscow continues to insist on maximalist positions, including about asserting territorial control and ensuring Ukraine never joins NATO. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly said that it will not concede to the Kremlin’s demands and accused President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia of stalling for time.

Unlike previous cease-fire discussions, which involved top government officials from all sides, this new round will focus on technical matters and will mostly involve diplomats and government advisers. Keith Kellogg, the U.S. special envoy to Ukraine, said that the American delegation would include some of his own staff, along with Michael Anton, policy planning director at the State Department; and aides to the national security adviser, Michael Waltz.

The Russian delegation

Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman, said on Friday that Mr. Putin had personally selected negotiators for the talks. The Russian delegation will be led by Grigory B. Karasin, a senior Russian diplomat and lawmaker; and Sergey O. Beseda, an adviser to the head of the Federal Security Service, or F.S.B., the country’s domestic intelligence agency.

While Mr. Karasin has been involved in sensitive foreign policy talks before, Mr. Beseda’s choice came as a surprise to some.

An influential spymaster, Mr. Beseda was head of the F.S.B. department responsible for international intelligence operations. He has been described by Russian news outlets as one of the main sources of intelligence that convinced Mr. Putin in 2022 that there was pro-Russian sentiment in Ukraine and that a brisk invasion could easily dismantle the government in Kyiv.

In 2023, Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, called Mr. Beseda a “very problematic person” for Ukraine who “has done a lot of evil.”

The Ukrainian delegation

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said his defense minister, Rustem Umerov, would attend the negotiations in Riyadh. Mr. Umerov will be joined by Pavlo Palisa, a top military adviser to Mr. Zelensky, according to the Ukrainian official.

Both Mr. Umerov and Mr. Palisa are members of the Ukrainian delegation for peace talks that Mr. Zelensky appointed this month, a group led by his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak. Mr. Umerov was a key negotiator for Ukraine in peace talks with Russian diplomats in the early months of the war.

Given the technical nature of the talks on energy and shipping, Mr. Zelensky said that Ukraine would also send experts to Saudi Arabia. “There will be military, energy specialists, as well as people who are well versed in port and other civilian infrastructure,” he said on Wednesday.

Mr. Zelensky said Ukraine would prepare a list of infrastructure objects that could be included in the cease-fire agreement. He added that a third party would have to monitor the cease-fire, and suggested that the United States could do so.

While Russia and Ukraine may find common ground in talks about energy and shipping, both have laid out conditions for a complete cessation of hostilities that appear irreconcilable — a sign of the steep challenges ahead in any broader peace negotiations.

Moscow’s position

This past week, during a telephone conversation with President Trump, Mr. Putin said that Russia would agree to a temporary truce only if Ukraine stopped mobilizing soldiers, training troops or importing weapons for the duration of any pause in fighting.

Mr. Putin also demanded the complete halt of foreign military aid and intelligence to Kyiv, calling it “the key condition for preventing an escalation of the conflict and making progress toward its resolution through political and diplomatic means,” according to the Kremlin’s readout of the call.

The White House said that military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine would continue despite the Kremlin’s demands. But the Trump administration has been less clear on Moscow’s calls for territorial concessions and at times even appeared to align with the Kremlin’s stance.

Mr. Witkoff echoed a Kremlin talking point on Friday in saying that an “overwhelming majority” of Ukrainians living in four regions of the country that Russia has annexed had “indicated that they want to be under Russian rule” during referendums organized by Moscow. Those referendums were widely denounced as fraudulent and illegal by the international community.

Fundamentally, Russia’s position regarding the conflict has remained the same. The Kremlin says it wants to “eliminate the root causes of the crisis” — essentially demanding that Ukraine capitulate. That would mean Kyiv’s recognizing Russia’s territorial gains, declaring neutrality and agreeing to shrink its military, which would most likely leave Ukraine vulnerable to another invasion.

Kyiv’s position

Ukraine had previously agreed to an unconditional 30-day truce to cease all combat operations, at the urging of the Trump administration. But after Moscow said that it would support only a partial cease-fire on energy infrastructure, Mr. Zelensky spoke with Mr. Trump and agreed to the limited truce.

In recent days, Ukrainian officials have set out red lines going into negotiations: Kyiv will never accept Russian sovereignty over occupied Ukrainian territory, it will not agree to be blocked from joining NATO or to reduce the size of its army, and it must have security guarantees as part of any peace settlement.

Many Ukrainian officials and analysts express doubt that even a limited cease-fire will hold for long, noting that previous truces between Moscow and Kyiv were routinely violated, with each side blaming the other.

“I do not believe in a cease-fire. We’ve been through this before,” Kostyantyn Yeliseev, a seasoned diplomat and former Ukrainian deputy foreign minister who took part in cease-fire negotiations in 2014 and 2015, said in an interview.

What’s next?

Mr. Witkoff said on Wednesday in an interview with Bloomberg News that Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin were “likely” to meet in Saudi Arabia within weeks. American officials will also probably continue meeting their Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in the Middle East to discuss details of a possible limited truce.

But the foundations of the diplomatic process have been wobbly, analysts said, with Moscow and Kyiv ready to continue fighting.

“Both sides still believe that they can continue the war regardless of the American position,” said Dmitry Kuznets, a military analyst with the Russian news outlet Meduza, which operates from Latvia after being outlawed by the Kremlin.

Getting Access to EU Private Savings

The idea that the EU elite has had for a number of years now is, as shocking as it may sound, to access private savings by proposing “attractive” EU investment instruments to regular Europeans not used to thinking about government agencies as swindlers. But private savings ought to be completely off bounds for State agencies, the first reason being that such savings have already been taxed once (and sometimes even twice!). Yet, the EU elite is salivating at the thought of getting access to private savings of Europeans, in order to cover for years of economic mistreatment and interventionism, which has led to anemic growth in the EU zone, lack of competitiveness and a desperate need for capital.

Indeed, Draghi lamented in a 2024 speech that, “the EU has very high private savings, but they are mostly funneled into banks deposits and do not end up financing growth as much as they could in a larger capital market. This is why advancing the Capital Markets Union (CMU) is an indispensable part of the overall competitiveness strategy.”

It’s hardly possible to have a bigger red flag than Draghi openly saying this.

The CMU seems to be an umbrella term covering everything from joint EU debt, ECB money printing (ESM), the harmonization of financial rules across the EU, to dipping into the well-earned savings of European individuals and companies.

Ex-Italian PM Enrico Letta even stated, shockingly, that the aim with the CMU was for the European leaders to “pull trillions from the bloc’s collective couch cushions by offering savers an easier way to invest in stocks”. His report from April 2024, also stated (p26) that “by achieving full integration of financial services within the Single Market, the Savings and Investments Union is envisioned to retain European private savings”


Bruegel peddling “attractive” EU investment instruments to gullible Europeans

This pro-EU Bruegel think-tank put it more specifically: “The European Union is sitting on €33.5 trillion in household savings, or one quarter of its collective GDP, yet much of this money is stuck in banks because households prefer cash over market investments.”

Shame on households to “prefer cash to market investments”! As if on cue, Macron’s Elysée Palace also declared that “household savings should be enabled to fund more directly the massive investments we need to boost our competitiveness.”

It cannot be clearer, therefore, what the plan is in this regard. These comments tell of institutions that not only want to eventually get rid of cash for increased control, but that first want to use private individual savings to compensate for the failed and rigid European monetary, fiscal, and welfare policies that have been stifling investment and competitiveness on the continent for decades.

This plan is obviously not meant to serve the people of Europe, who have already been almost taxed to economic death or subsidized to apathy. It is to serve the EU political and financial elite. This is clear from the efforts and dedication that unelected EU bureaucrats are putting into this. Here is a finaly reminder of this brazenly public attempt to convince the public to let go of their savings:



What remains to be explained are the practicalities: what kinds of financial instruments, or securities, are going to be marketed and pushed through the banking sector, and then actively and slickly proposed to the European populations?

“Money Is Never Idle”

A bit of Austrian economic theory is necessary now. Savings are a sign of a wealthy economy; a sign that society has resources that do not immediately need to be employed in urgent production. But, as Ludwig von Mises noted, “money is never idle.” Deposits not only reflect individuals’ natural and varying inclinations to save, but as Mises explained in Human Action (1949):

“If the individual saver employs his additional savings for increasing his cash holding because this is in his eyes the most advantageous mode of using them, he brings about a tendency toward a fall in commodity prices and a rise in the monetary unit’s purchasing power.”

Savings are thus deflationary, they increase the value of the money in circulation (providing there is little or no monetary creation). Savings thus also fulfill an important role in the free market. The sentence from Mises quoted above is important because it encapsulates economic fundamentals that are never discussed today. It is an insight that many people understand somewhat implicitly despite the inflationary times that have been foisted upon Westerns and others for decades and that are now considered “normal”. But politicians obviously choose to disregard this key economic learning, for obvious reasons.

In a free society (i.e. not the European Union), savings fulfill an important and naturally calibrating role that should be not incumbent upon any government institutions to create or destroy.

Drug shortages in the UK have risen to their worst level for four years, official figures show, with Brexit considered a key reason so many medications are scarce.

Drug companies notified the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) about disruptions to supply 1,938 times during last year – the highest number since the 1,967 seen in 2021.

Medications to treat epilepsy and cystic fibrosis are among those that pharmacists are finding it hard or impossible to get hold of, creating risks for patients’ health.

The figures have emerged in a new report by the Nuffield Trust health thinktank, which obtained them under freedom of information laws from the DHSC, which oversees the availability of drugs UK-wide.(...)

Trump says ‘contract’ being drafted on ‘dividing up’ land in Ukraine war

President Trump said “contracts” are being negotiated to divide up land as part of a final deal ending Russia’s war in Ukraine and reiterated that a ceasefire could come “pretty soon.”

“They are fighting against each other,” Trump told reporters Friday in the White House. “I think we’re going to have ceasefire on a lot of areas and so far, that’s all held very well.” 

“In getting that ceasefire, they had a lot of guns pointing at each other. You had some soldiers unfortunately surrounded by other soldiers,” the president said. “They are going to be — I believe we’re going to pretty soon have a full ceasefire, and then we’re going to have a contract, and the contract’s being negotiated, the contract in terms of dividing up the lands, etc., etc. It’s being negotiated as we speak.”

Russia controls nearly 20 percent of Ukraine’s land.

The Trump administration has pushed to secure a partial ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that would involve energy facilities and infrastructure. Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his support for the limited ceasefire involving energy facilities but rejected the U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire that Kyiv endorsed earlier this month.

During his Tuesday call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump proposed the U.S. take ownership of some of Ukraine’s power plants as a way of providing protection in the future.

“American ownership of those plants would be the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure,” national security adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a joint statement after Trump’s one-hour call with Zelensky.

“He said that the United States could be very helpful in running those plants with its electricity and utility expertise,” the pair stated.

Zelensky did not mention Trump’s proposal regarding power plants after the phone call with the commander in chief, but he said Ukraine would continue its cooperation with Washington and reaffirmed his support for the partial ceasefire.

“We agreed that Ukraine and the United States should continue working together to achieve a real end to the war and lasting peace,” Zelensky stated. “We believe that together with America, with President Trump, and under American leadership, lasting peace can be achieved this year.”

Trump’s desire to control some of Ukraine’s power plants is reportedly related to his backing of the Ukraine-U.S. minerals deal, an agreement that was not signed following the explosive back-and-forth between the president and Zelensky late last month.

“When there is peace, the president wants Ukraine and the US to have a partnership that ensures both nations an opportunity to grow their economies and bring stability to Europe’s backyard. American innovation and technology can help make that happen,” National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes said in a Friday statement to The Hill.
