Sds.
Howard Lutnick heckled at Davos dinner as Christine Lagarde walks outEvent hosted by Larry Fink descended into uproar after combative remarks by US commerce secretaryHoward Lutnick is said to have told the audience that the world should focus on coal as an energy source rather than renewables © Denis Balibouse/ReutersUS commerce secretary Howard Lutnick was heckled at a World Economic Forum dinner in Davos, with European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde walking out during his speech. The gathering on Tuesday night descended into uproar after combative remarks from Lutnick, according to several people present, with widespread jeering amid appeals for calm from BlackRock’s Larry Fink, the host of the event and interim co-chair of the WEF.Lagarde was among the attendees who walked out during the speech, according to people familiar with the matter. This year’s gathering in the Alps has the theme: “A spirit of dialogue.”Lutnick told his audience that the world should focus on coal as an energy source rather than renewables, according to one person present, and made dismissive comments about Europe. He had earlier on Tuesday written an op-ed for the FT in which he said: “We’re not going to Davos to uphold the status quo. We’re going to confront it head-on.”He also wrote: “We are here at Davos to make one thing crystal clear: With President Trump, capitalism has a new sheriff in town.”One chief executive present described the atmosphere as “tense”, while another said it was “noisy and spicy”.One of the hecklers was Al Gore, the former US vice-president, according to two executives present. The US commerce department said: “Only one person booed, and it was Al Gore.”Gore said: “I sat and listened to his remarks. Meloni: More time needed to decide on Gaza boardItalian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remarked on Wednesday that she does not fully reject the idea of membership on the United States President Donald Trump-proposed Gaza Board of Peace but noted that "we need more time" to assess potential constitutional issues.Speaking on Porta a Porta television show, Meloni noted that Italy is "open, available, and interested" in having a seat on the board, pointing out the importance of Europe being represented there. However, she said that there are "some elements of incompatibility" between the regulation of the board and the Italian constitution.Furthermore, Meloni expressed certainty that, if it were to be formed, the board would not become a "private" United Nations.
President Trump said Wednesday that he’s reached the framework of a deal with NATO on the future of Greenland and will not impose tariffs he previously threatened on European countries. “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post from Davos, Switzerland. “Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress,” he continued.Trump’s backtrack came shortly after he met with Rutte at Davos. When asked about Danish officials’ unwillingness to discuss the U.S. acquiring Greenland, Trump said Rutte was “more important” than Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Earlier Wednesday, Trump made headlines when he said he would not use military force to acquire the Danish territory, but he continued to argue in favor of the U.S. owning it.“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be frankly unstoppable. But, I won’t do that,” Trump said in Davos, speaking to the economic forum.“I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force. All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland,” he continued. The president went on to lay out the argument for the U.S. acquiring the Danish territory, saying it would only “strengthen” the NATO alliance.Trump had previously slapped a 10 percent tariff on Denmark and its European allies over the issue of Greenland, rattling much of Europe. Europe hit back on Wednesday by suspending the approval of a trade deal reached with Trump in July. This story was updated at 3:08 p.m.
