After Forced Return-to-Office, Some Amazon Workers Find Not Enough Desks, No Parking

Amazon has angered its workers again "after forcing them to return to the office five days a week," reports the New York Post. The problem? "Not enough desks for everyone." (As well as "packed parking lots" that are turning some workers away.)

The Post cites interviews conducted with seven Amazon employees by Business Insider (which notes that in mid-December Amazon had already delayed full return-to-office at dozens of locations, sometimes until as late as May, because of office-capacity issues).

Here in mid-January, the Post writes, many returning-to-office workers still aren't happy:

Some meeting rooms have not had enough chairs — and there also have not been enough meeting rooms for everyone, one worker told the publication... [S​]imply reaching the office is a challenge in itself, according to the report. Some complained they were turned away from company parking lots that were full, while others griped about having to join meetings from the road due to excess traffic on their way to the office, according to the Slack messages. Once staffers conquer the challenges of reaching the office and finding a desk, some lamented the lack of in-person discussions since many of the meetings remain virtual, according to BI.
Amazon acknowledged they had offices that were "not quite ready" to "welcome everyone back a full five days a week," according to Post, though Amazon believed the number of not-quite-ready offices were "relatively small".

But the parking lot situation may continue. Business Insider says one employee from Amazon's Nashville office "said the wait time for a company parking pass was backed up for months." (Although another Nashville staffer said Amazon was handing out passes for them to take mass-transit for free, which they'd described as "incredibly generous.")

There's also Amazon shuttle busses, according to the article. Although other staffers "said they were denied a spot on Amazon shuttle buses because the vehicles were full..."

Others said they just drove back home, while some staffers found street parking nearby, according to multiple Slack messages seen by Business Insider...

This month, some employees were still questioning the logic behind the policy. They said being in the office has had little effect on their work routine and has not generated much of a productivity gain. A considerable portion of their in-office work is still being done through video calls with customers who are elsewhere, these employees told BI. Many Amazon colleagues are at other office locations, so face-to-face meetings still don't happen very often, they added.
The Post adds another drawback of returning to the office. "Employees at Amazon's Toronto office said their personal belongings have repeatedly been stolen from their desks."

In an email obtained by Business Insider, CEO Michael Dell writes that 'all hybrid and remote team members who live near a Dell office will work in the office five days a week. We are retiring the hybrid policy effective that day.'

"What we're finding is that for all the technology in the world, nothing is faster than the speed of human interaction. A thirty second conversation can replace an email back-and-forth that goes on for hours or even days," Dell writes. Despite this mandate, Dell also continues to sell remote work solutions, noting that remote work offers "benefits such as flexibility, reduced commute times, and cost savings for employees, while employers can access a broader talent pool, reduce overhead costs, and increase productivity."

Enésimo intento de despido colectivo encubierto.

Sea por el invierno demográfico o por cualquier otra razón, hay una tensión evidente entre empresa y empleado. Las empresas tienden a resistirse porque ven peligrar su poder. El problema es que la pelea entre el gato y el ratón nunca termina, el equilibrio es necesario, y es peligroso tratar de resistirse a lo inevitable.

La aparición del teletrabajo ha puesto al descubierto muchas de las contradicciones laborales que había en los trabajos de cuello blanco. Ahora habrá estos movimientos hasta que un nuevo equilibrio se asiente.

Heather Long: It's a loaded question, but I would say, unfortunately, 2025 is the year of operational efficiency, and that's corporate speak for save money at all costs. How do you save money? The easiest way is to get people to quit. What are these return to office mandates, particularly the five day a week in office mandates? We have a lot of data on this now, and it shows people will quit and you don't even have to pay them severance to do it.

Molly Roberts: It's not about productivity for the people who are in the office, then, you think. It's more about just cutting down on the size of the workforce generally.

Heather Long: I do think so. There has been a decent amount of research so far on fully remote, hybrid and fully in office. It's a mixed bag for fully remote. That's why I think if you look at the Fortune 500, only about 16 companies are fully remote, but a lot of them are hybrid. The reason that so much companies are hybrid is because that's the sweet spot. There is no productivity difference between the hybrid schedule and fully in the office five days a week. But what you do see a big difference is employee satisfaction and happiness and employee retention....

I think if what we're talking about is places that have been able to do work from home successfully for the past several years, why are they suddenly in 2025, saying the whole world has changed and we need to come back to the office five days a week? You should definitely be skeptical.
"Who are the first people to leave in these scenarios? It's star employees who know they can get a job elsewhere," Long says (adding later that "There's also quantifiable data that show that, particularly parents, the childcare issues are real.") Long also points out that most of Nvidia's workforce is fully remote — and that housing prices have spiked in some areas where employers are now demanding people return to the office.

But employers also know hiring rates are now low, argues Long, so they're pushing their advantage — possibly out of some misplaced nostalgia. "[T]here's a huge, huge perception difference between what managers, particularly senior leaders in an organization, how effective they think [people were] in offices versus what the rank and file people think. Rank and file people tend to prefer hybrid because they don't want their time wasted."

Their discussion also notes a recent Harvard Business School survey that found that 40% of people would trade 5% or more of their salaries to work from home....

Desde que empezó la fiebre por "quitar el teletrabajo", los que conocíamos esto redujimos las razones a dos. No nos creímos nunca el cuento de la eficiencia. Sólo cabía o justificar la existencia de oficinas físicas caras -con las comisiones que el CEO y la directiva a buen seguro se llevan-, y hacer un despido colectivo encubierto.

A un servidor allá por 2021 le pusieron teletrabajo permanente a tiempo completo -junto al resto de la plantilla, claro- porque trascendieron bajas significativas antes de eso. En concreto, una trabajadora en un puesto delicado que hizo la peineta al necesitar ir a cuidar de su padre enfermo y no permitirlo la empresa, pudiendo teletrabajar.


Por supuesto, si haces esa gilipollez con idea de echar gente, vas a perder a los mejores. Y si ya contabas con ello, es que tu empresa se hunde. Sólo alguien muy desesperado puede probar eso de reducir la plantilla sacrificando a los mejores y quedarse con los baratos, y creer que eso va a ir a alguna parte.
