World's First Front-Flippin' Humanoid Robot

Chinese robotics company Zhongqing Robotics (also known as Engine AI) posted a video of what is claimed to be the world's first humanoid robot front flip. New Atlas reports:

Ten years ago, this kind of stuff simply did not exist. And now you can buy your very own open-source PM01 robot for US$13,700, according to EngineAI's website. Its specs aren't bad: 5-DoF (degrees of freedom) in each arm and six per leg. That's 23-DoF in body movement in total. The bot also boasts 221 lb-ft of torque (300 Nm), which seems like quite a punch when the little guy is only 4.5 ft (138 cm) tall and weighs 88 lb (40kg).

Micron's DDR5 modules hit 9200MT/s using EUV lithography
Micron becomes first to ship DDR5 modules built using EUV lithography on its new 1-gamma node. The breakthrough delivers 15 percent faster speeds up to 9200MT/s while cutting power consumption by 20 percent and increasing density by 30 percent.

Micron Technology has just become the first memory maker to ship sample units of DDR5 modules built on its sixth-generation 10nm-class DRAM node, also known as 1γ (1-gamma). For the first time ever, Micron is utilizing EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography in its manufacturing process, which brings noteworthy gains in speed, power efficiency, and production yields.

Thanks to this new approach, Micron’s 16 GB DDR5 ICs can reach speeds of up to 9200MT/s. That’s a solid 15 percent performance boost compared to the previous 1β (1-beta) generation, all while lowering power consumption by more than 20 percent. On top of that, the updated production technique provides over 30 percent higher bit density, which could help push down costs once the manufacturing process matures.

”Micron’s expertise in developing proprietary DRAM technologies, combined with our strategic use of EUV lithography, has resulted in a robust portfolio of cutting-edge 1γ-based memory products poised to propel the AI ecosystem forward,” said Scott DeBoer, Micron’s executive vice president and chief technology & products officer.

Micron plans to use the 1γ node across a broad range of future memory solutions, including:

Data center applications: Offering up to 15 percent faster performance along with better energy efficiency to keep power consumption and heat in check.

Mobile devices: LPDDR5X variants will support cutting-edge AI experiences right on your smartphone or tablet.

Automotive systems: LPDDR5X running at up to 9600MT/s will expand capacity, extend product lifespans, and deliver stronger performance.

Both AMD and Intel have already started validating Micron’s new DDR5 lineup. Amit Goel, Corporate VP of Server Platform Solutions Engineering at AMD, highlighted how this collaboration aligns with the company’s efforts to keep refining its EPYC processors and consumer-oriented hardware. Meanwhile, Dr. Dimitrios Ziakas from Intel drew attention to the improved power efficiency and higher density that will benefit server environments and AI-driven PCs.

Currently, Micron produces these 1γ DRAM chips at its facilities in Japan, where the company introduced its first EUV lithography system in 2024. As production ramps up, Micron plans to install additional EUV equipment at its sites in both Japan and Taiwan.

World's First 'Synthetic Biological Intelligence' Runs On Living Human Cells

Australian company Cortical Labs has launched the CL1, the world's first commercial "biological computer" that merges human brain cells with silicon hardware to form adaptable, energy-efficient neural networks. New Atlas reports:

Known as a Synthetic Biological Intelligence (SBI), Cortical's CL1 system was officially launched in Barcelona on March 2, 2025, and is expected to be a game-changer for science and medical research. The human-cell neural networks that form on the silicon "chip" are essentially an ever-evolving organic computer, and the engineers behind it say it learns so quickly and flexibly that it completely outpaces the silicon-based AI chips used to train existing large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT.

"Today is the culmination of a vision that has powered Cortical Labs for almost six years," said Cortical founder and CEO Dr Hon Weng Chong. "We've enjoyed a series of critical breakthroughs in recent years, most notably our research in the journal Neuron, through which cultures were embedded in a simulated game-world, and were provided with electrophysiological stimulation and recording to mimic the arcade game Pong. However, our long-term mission has been to democratize this technology, making it accessible to researchers without specialized hardware and software. The CL1 is the realization of that mission." He added that while this is a groundbreaking step forward, the full extent of the SBI system won't be seen until it's in users' hands.

"We're offering 'Wetware-as-a-Service' (WaaS)," he added -- customers will be able to buy the CL-1 biocomputer outright, or simply buy time on the chips, accessing them remotely to work with the cultured cell technology via the cloud. "This platform will enable the millions of researchers, innovators and big-thinkers around the world to turn the CL1's potential into tangible, real-word impact. We'll provide the platform and support for them to invest in R&D and drive new breakthroughs and research." These remarkable brain-cell biocomputers could revolutionize everything from drug discovery and clinical testing to how robotic "intelligence" is built, allowing unlimited personalization depending on need. The CL1, which will be widely available in the second half of 2025, is an enormous achievement for Cortical -- and as New Atlas saw recently with a visit to the company's Melbourne headquarters -- the potential here is much more far-reaching than Pong. AI-Driven Weather Prediction Breakthrough Reported

A new AI system called Aardvark could deliver weather forecasts as accurate as those from advanced public weather services but run on desktop computers, according to a project unveiled Thursday and published in Nature. Developed by the UK's Alan Turing Institute with partners including Cambridge University, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and Microsoft, Aardvark aims to make sophisticated forecasting accessible to countries with fewer resources, particularly in Africa.

The system has already outperformed the US Global Forecast System on many variables in testing. Project leader Richard Turner noted the system is "completely open source" and not planned for commercialization by Microsoft.

'Kids Are Spending Too Much Class Time on Laptops'

Over the past two decades, school districts have spent billions equipping classrooms with laptops, yet students have fallen further behind on essential skills, Michael Bloomberg argues. With about 90% of schools now providing these devices, test scores hover near historic lows -- only 28% of eighth graders proficient in math and 30% in reading.

Bloomberg notes technology's classroom push came from technologists and government officials who envisioned tailored curricula. Computer manufacturers, despite good intentions, had financial interests and profited substantially. The Google executive who questioned why children should learn equations when they could Google answers might now ask why they should write essays when chatbots can do it for them.

Studies confirm traditional methods -- reading and writing on paper -- remain superior to screen-based approaches. Devices distract students, with research showing up to 20 minutes needed to refocus after nonacademic activities. As some districts ban smartphones during school hours, Bloomberg suggests reconsidering classroom computer policies, recommending locked carts for more purposeful use and greater transparency for parents about screen time. Technology's promise has failed while imposing significant costs on children and taxpayers, he writes. Bloomberg calls for a return to books and pens over laptops and tablets.
