Cory Doctorow's Prescient Novella About Health Insurance and Murder

Five years ago, journalist and sci-fi author Cory Doctorow published a short story that explored the radicalization of individuals denied healthcare coverage. As The Guardian notes in a recent article, the story "might seem eerily similar" to the recent shooting of UnitedHealthcare's CEO. While it appears that the alleged shooter never read the story, Doctorow said: "I feel like the most important thing about that is that it tells you that this is not a unique insight." Doctorow continued: "that the question that I had is a question other people have had." As an activist in favor of liberalizing copyright laws and a proponent of the Creative Commons organization, it's important to note that Doctorow advocates for systemic reform through collective action rather than violence. In Radicalized, one of four novellas comprising a science fiction novel of the same name, Doctorow charts the journey of a man who joins an online forum for fathers whose partners or children have been denied healthcare coverage by their insurers after his wife is diagnosed with breast cancer and denied coverage for an experimental treatment. Slowly, over the course of the story, the men of the forum become radicalized by their grief and begin plotting -- and executing -- murders of health insurance executives and politicians who vote against universal healthcare.

In the wake of the December 4 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which unleashed a wave of outrage at the U.S. health system, Doctorow's novella has been called prescient. When the American Prospect magazine republished the story last week, it wrote: "It is being republished with permission for reasons that will become clear if you read it." But Doctorow doesn't think he was on to something that no one else in the U.S. understood. [...]

In one part of the story, a man whose young daughter died after an insurance company refused to pay for brain surgery bombs the insurer's headquarters. "It's not vengeance. I don't have a vengeful bone in my body. Nothing I do will bring Lisa back, so why would I want revenge? This is a public service. There's another dad just like me," he shares in a video message on the forum. "And right now, that dad is talking to someone at Cigna, or Humana, or BlueCross BlueShield, and the person on the phone is telling that dad that his little girl has. To. Die. Someone in that building made the decision to kill my little girl, and everyone else in that building went along with it. Not one of them is innocent, and not one of them is afraid. They're going to be afraid, after this."

"Because they must know in their hearts," he goes on. "Them, their lobbyists, the men in Congress who enabled them. They're parents. They know. Anyone who hurt their precious children, they'd hunt that person down like a dog. The only amazing thing about any of this is that no one has done it yet. I'm going to make a prediction right now, that even though I'm the first, I sure as hell will not be the last. There's more to come."

Some Passengers Riding in Waymo's Driverless Cars Face Uncomfortable Situations

Alphabet's Waymo robotaxis are providing "hundreds of thousands of driverless rides each month," reports the Washington Post. But as the robotaxi service expands in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin, some passengers "have found that traveling by robotaxi can make riders into sitting ducks for a new form of public harassment."

The Washington Post spoke with four Waymo passengers, three of them women, who said they experienced harassment or what felt like threats to their safety from people who followed, obstructed or attempted to enter a driverless vehicle they were riding in...

Elliot, a tech worker in San Francisco, recalled in a phone interview a "scary" situation during a Waymo ride late one night in October. A pedestrian tried to enter the driverless vehicle as it waited at a red light. "Go away," Elliot yelled at the man as he knocked on the window before briefly flashing what looked like a knife, video of the incident viewed by The Post showed... In the moment, Elliot said, he wished someone could have "slammed on the gas and gotten away from this guy," adding that Waymo should change how its vehicles respond in such situations...

Madelline, a 25-year-old restaurant server in San Francisco, said that during a recent Waymo ride at around 2 a.m., the driverless vehicle had to stop after two drivers ahead began yelling at each other and throwing things out of their cars in what appeared to be a road rage dispute. The two cars blocked an intersection and one person got out of one of the vehicles. "I was definitely panicking a little bit," Madelline said, as her car waited for the road to clear instead of turning off as a human driver might do... She would like to have more control over a robotaxi's route but still prefers Waymo rides to using Uber or Lyft, whose drivers sometimes make her uncomfortable...

In September, Amina V. was on her way to a hair appointment when a man stepped in front of her robotaxi and the car stalled in the middle of the street. She already had been recording herself in the Waymo, so she turned the camera to capture the man hitting on her while her car stood frozen in San Francisco's Soma neighborhood.

And one Saturday night at 10:30 p.m., a tech worker named Stephanie took a driverless Waymo robotaxi with her sister, and reports confronting "several young men close to the robotaxi honking and yelling, 'Hey, ladies — you guys are hot.'

If she or another human had been driving, it would have been easy to reroute the car to avoid leading the pursuers to her home. But she was scared and didn't know how to change the robot's path. She called 911, but a dispatcher said they couldn't send a police car to a moving vehicle, Stephanie recalled... [S​]he said the other car gave up the chase when the Waymo was a minute from her house. She and her sister arrived home safely, though terrified. Stephanie didn't catch the car's license plate number, which the 911 dispatcher requested after her ride concluded. Waymo vehicles, like other driverless cars in development, use multiple cameras to help make sense of the world around them. But when she later asked the company for the car's video footage, hoping it had captured the license plate, Waymo declined to provide it, she said.

She would like closer coordination between Waymo and first responders and says she is now unsure about self-driving rides after dark. "I would feel safe taking it during the day," Stephanie said. But "at night, maybe I'm safer having someone else in the car just in case something happens."

A Waymo spokesperson told the Washington Post that their support agents will stay on the line with riders who call in about incidents like this, also working with law enforcement as appropriate — but the agents can't change the vehicle's specific route. En la era de las red flags, las situationships y el ghosting empezar una nueva relación amorosa puede ser cada vez más difícil. “No saber lidiar con la incertidumbre que producen los comienzos, el miedo al rechazo o las malas experiencias pasadas son el origen de traumas que puede resultar difícil superar”, explica la psicóloga sanitaria y vocal del Colegio Oficial de Psicología de Madrid Elena Daprá. En este contexto, ha surgido un inesperado consejero sentimental: la IA.

Basta con entrar TikTok y poner la palabra ChatGPT para que, en cuestión de segundos, aparezcan miles de videos que, grabados por mujeres, cuentan que han descargado la conversación de WhatsApp que tienen con la persona que les gusta para pedirle a la IA que les diga cuáles son las posibles red flags (comportamientos tóxicos) que se pueden encontrar entre los mensajes compartidos.

Todas las publicaciones empiezan así: “He conocido a alguien, y como siempre tengo dudas de si estaré siendo muy intensa y de dónde va la relación, he decidido pasarle la conversación de estos dos meses a la IA para me haga un análisis”, “Hace unas semanas conocí a alguien, pero no lo he vuelto a ver así que le pedí a ChatGPT que analizara la conversación” o “De las 100 preguntas que le he preguntado a la IA, la mejor ha sido saber si yo estoy más involucrada en la relación”. Las respuestas son infinitas, aunque la conclusión de muchas de estas mismas creadoras de contenido es que la primera red flag es haber sometido su relación al análisis de una máquina.

María Elena Daprá explica qué cada vez tiene más casos en consulta de mujeres que le confiesan que están utilizando este método para analizar sus relaciones amorosas. A lo que ella les responde: “Si se está utilizando la IA es porque de base la persona siente que hay un problema en la relación y lo que hay que hacer es analizar qué está generando estos sentimientos”. Algunas de las razones por las cuales se cae en esta práctica, según la experta, pueden tener que ver con la falta de comunicación, la poca autoestima o una mala gestión de la responsabilidad emocional.

Hay que tener en cuenta cuando se recurre a la Inteligencia Artificial que la comunicación entre dos personas es bidireccional. “Cuando ChatGPT analiza solo el texto de una conversación de WhatsApp, le estamos dando solo una parte de la información, la verbal. Sin embargo, nos estamos olvidando del lenguaje no verbal, que puede cambiar todo el sentido de lo que se está intentando trasmitir. Se están perdiendo muchos datos y señales que pueden ser claves. Esto es como ir a que te lean las cartas. La persona puede decidir si creer o no, pero eso no significa que sea fiable”, asegura Daprá.

Es importante también entender cómo funciona ChatGPT antes de utilizarlo como consejero amoroso. El asesor de la Comisión Europea en IA y robótica Antonio L. Flores explica a S Moda por teléfono que la IA es capaz de analizar millones de datos en segundos y que eso en teoría podría mejorar cualquier recomendación que pueda dar una tercera persona. “La IA detecta patrones aprendidos y con esa información da una respuesta. El problema es que cada uno de nosotros somos únicos y actuamos según miles de variables. Además, la mayoría de las IA han sido entrenadas con textos en inglés y están programadas para analizar según unos códigos culturales diferentes al que podemos estar acostumbrados en España”, afirma.

Cuando se le pregunta al mismo ChatGPT por qué cada vez más gente lo utiliza como terapeuta, da tres razones: por su accesibilidad, dado que siempre está disponible, porque la gente se siente más cómoda hablando con una IA, ya que no hay juicios ni estigmatizaciones y porque ayuda a exteriorizar lo que se está pensando. “Sin embargo, es importante recordar que no reemplazo a un profesional de la salud mental, pero puedo ofrecer información, recursos y una escucha atenta”, responde ChatGPT cuando le preguntas sobre estos temas.

Para el sexólogo Bruno Martínez que las personas estén recurriendo a la IA en busca de respuestas no es nada nuevo. “A lo largo del tiempo siempre han existido los consultorios sentimentales. Hay quienes han pagado porque les lean el oráculo, otros interactúan en foros de internet en donde se plantean estás cuestiones, y en una época la gente hasta llamaba a la radio para saber la opinión de una tarotista”. En el fondo, todos buscan lo mismo: la reafirmación de que su pareja les quiere y su corazón está a salvo. “Vivimos en una época de muchos cambios en las relaciones sentimentales, y hay una soledad creciente que hace que mucha gente no tenga con quién desahogarse y cada vez le damos más valor a la tecnología”, asegura Martínez.

Sin embargo, hay que ser consciente de que en el fondo ChatGPT es solo un buscador muy rápido de la información disponible en internet que no puede dar una respuesta individualizada. “Se está humanizando la tecnología y la mayoría de las personas no sabe cómo funcionan. Se cree que es una inteligencia humana y no es así. Las emociones pueden ser muy complejas de analizar, y una máquina es incapaz de sentir”, afirma el experto.

Este es un ejemplo de una posible respuesta que da la IA al leer una conversación de WhatsApp entre dos personas que se conocen hace un mes: “Parece que hay una buena conexión entre ustedes. Las bromas, el coqueteo y la manera en que se interesan el uno por el otro son señales positivas. Ambos parecen disfrutar la conversación y están abiertos a pasar tiempo juntos, lo cual es un buen indicador. ¡Definitivamente, hay química!”, se puede leer en su web.

Según la sexóloga docente en Escuela Sexológica, Norma Ageitos Urain, el análisis de esta conversación puede tener un sesgo. “La IA no tiene capacidad de análisis emocional. Muchas pacientes en consulta creen que toda la información que sacan de ahí es fiable y pueden llegar a hacer conclusiones apresuradas. La IA no es capaz de entender la intención o la emoción del interlocutor”, afirma. A los consejeros sentimentales robóticos les queda mucho por aprender.
