Only half of the people who lost jobs during COVID are going back to work

(...) It may seem paradoxical for unemployment to remain high as job openings continue to reach record highs and wages rise to lure back workers. But there's a number of reasons that holes remain. One of them is childcare, with schools facing potential closures as the Delta variant spreads. And, as The Washington Post's Heather Long reports, childcare is facing its own staffing crisis, as workers leave the low-paying industry — and the industry sees 126,700 fewer workers than pre-pandemic.

Women over the age of 20, who already had a lower labor force participation than men, were particularly pummeled by pandemic caregiving responsibilities. In August, the labor force participation rate for those women actually dropped from the month prior, indicating yet another impact of the Delta variant.

The current shortages are likely driven in part by what economists call mismatches. That means there may be a disconnect between the skills applicants have and the jobs that are available (or employers' hiring software are filtering out people who may have relevant, but not word-for-word necessary skills).

Workers have also shown that they want more from work, leaving industries like leisure and hospitality en masse and quitting in record-breaking numbers for four months in a row.

Bancos, gobiernos regionales, bonuses, accionistas, bonistas...

How Much Extra Lending Has the Last $2.6 Trillion in QE Created? Negative $230 Billion

(...) So, how well has the last $2.6 trillion of QE worked? Since last April, the average 30-Year mortgage rate has fallen from 3.5% to 2.86% and BB High-Yield bond yields have fallen from 7.14% to just 3.12%.

So far, so good.

So, how much has bank lending increased?

As we have pointed out over and over, the limit on bank lending stopped being the availability of deposits or prevailing interest rates back in 2009 when the Fed dropped the Fed Funds rate to ‘0’ and created the ‘Excess bank reserve’ regime that we’ve been stuck in ever since. We are trillions upon trillions of dollars from a place where more QE will have any lasting bearing on bank lending growth.

Despite platitudes about stimulating the economy, QE is actually about three things: boosting asset prices, keeping the interest on the national debt down, and facilitating corporate bond issuance.

Collapsed Blackstone deal shows that ‘everything is political’ in China

(...) Not only was the world obsessing over the looming risk of default at property developer Evergrande, but less than a week earlier, Blackstone’s biggest ever bet on the Chinese real estate market — part of the engine of its Asia growth plans — had been thwarted by regulators in Beijing with no warning.

The buyout group was forced to call off a $3bn deal to buy property developer Soho China, whose skyscrapers line skylines in Shanghai and Beijing, after its founders — billionaire husband and wife Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin — had been accused of trying to cash out on their business and “flee” to the US.

“Steve is a very diplomatic guy, who has been very successful in China by doing and saying the right things,” said a person briefed on the call.

It would have been a mistake to “pound the table”, said the same person while another briefed on the call said Schwarzman did not mention Soho China. Blackstone denied the “recurring meeting” had anything to do with the deal.

But the collapsed deal remains the elephant in the room and the latest episode to leave the private capital industry, which controls the flow of trillions of dollars worldwide, reassessing how to place its bets on the world’s second-largest economy.

Blackstone called off its Soho China bid after Beijing accused owners Zhang Xin and Pan Shiyi of trying to cash out and flee to the US

It also underlines that even the highly connected can struggle to navigate China’s political vagaries.

Schwarzman is “among the most influential of US dealmakers in China, and even he couldn’t secure the approval for a seemingly benign real estate acquisition, said Brock Silvers, chief investment officer of Hong Kong private equity firm Kaiyuan Capital.

Blackstone is not alone in coming up against roadblocks. Foreign listings of Chinese companies – a mainstay of Wall Street investing – have been derailed following the disastrous initial public offering of ride-hailing app Didi, while the dollar-bond market looks set to follow suit in light of unfolding events at Evergrande.

“Now, foreign private equity funds will likely look at China with a greater sense of caution,” said Silvers.(...)

Chinese conglomerate HNA says chief executive and chair arrested by police

Chinese police have detained the two remaining co-founders of HNA in the latest twist in the collapse of China’s hitherto most acquisitive group.

The bankrupt Chinese conglomerate, which is under state control, said chair Chen Feng and chief executive Adam Tan were taken into custody on Friday over suspected crimes, without providing details of the alleged offences.

The arrests return to the spotlight one of China’s most tumultuous corporate sagas. The move by Chinese officials comes three years after co-founder Wang Jian fell to his death in Bonnieux, southern France, in what French police said was an accident.  :o

The enigmatic trio amassed a debt pile of nearly $90bn in an acquisition spree that expanded the group’s assets by about $40bn in just two years in the mid-2010s.

What started as an airline became a travel industry-focused conglomerate that owned stakes in the Hilton hotel chain, Dutch transport group TIP Trailer Services and Irish aircraft leaser Avolon. It boasted the biggest single stake in Deutsche Bank, marquee properties such as New York’s 245 Park Avenue and US computer chip manufacturer Ingram Micro.

But the acquisitions were highly leveraged — borrowing against its base of Chinese assets — raising concerns about a domino effect back home, if the group suddenly could not repay, or refinance, its debts.

Chinese creditors in late January launched bankruptcy proceedings and days later, HNA subsidiaries said billions of dollars in funds had been misused.

Before their arrests on Friday, the formerly high-flying executives had mostly vanished from public view over the past few years. Chen was barred from taking flights and high-speed rail. Tan’s name last appeared on a company statement in September 2018.

State bankers and regulators have set up camp at the company’s offices in Hainan, an island off China’s south-east coastline for several years, trying to clean up the mess.

The executive chair of the group, Gu Gang, said on September 18 that debt restructuring talks had “entered the decisive last stage”. The proposed restructuring plan would break up the sprawling conglomerate into four entities, with new shareholders taking control of the aviation, airport, financial and commercial sectors.

“Experience tells us blind diversification rarely goes well,” said Gu, who is also leading the working committee responsible for unwinding HNA’s estimated $77bn of debts.

Even before Wang’s mysterious death, the group was facing immense pressure from regulators in China, and abroad, over the company’s opaque governance and ultimate ownership and its debts.

The group is one of China’s “grey rhinos” — so-called because they are threats seen but not acted upon. They have been likened to Evergrande, China’s embattled property developer whose debt problems have shaken global markets over recent weeks.

Experts say the experiences of HNA might have served as a clear warning over the future direction of the relationship between the authoritarian Chinese Communist party leadership and the entrepreneurs and business leaders on whom the country relies for economic growth.

Gu said on September 18 that the restructured group should “carry forward HNA’s excellent culture and abandon bad culture”.

Boris Johnson moves to soothe Emmanuel Macron over Aukus deal

In a brief statement, Macron’s office said the discussion on Friday morning was at Johnson’s request.

Johnson had “expressed his intention to restore co-operation between France and the UK, in line with our values and our common interests (the climate, the Indo-Pacific, the struggle against terrorism, etc)”, the French statement said.

Macron responded by saying “he was waiting for Johnson’s proposals”.

It Isn’t Over When The Fat Lady Sings – The First Russian Strategic Assessment of the Australia-UK-US (Aukus) Submarine Deal

(...) Can China ignore this threat? No.

Here is just one of many examples. Geographically, Australia can completely block the connection between China and the Indian Ocean: there is a direct exit there and this  is not controlled by China in any way. China only has the Strait of Malacca, which with its new submarines Australia will be able to block from the Indian Ocean. Or go past Australia itself, with the same submarines and its aircraft. There is no other road by which a large amount of oil can be supplied to China.

Australia would never have had these opportunities in this form if it had continued its work on the purchase of non-nuclear submarines from France. A non-nuclear (in fact the same diesel-electric) submarine is not capable, for example, of going under water at a high speed, as the ‘Virginias’ and ‘Astutes’ can, and secretly, without a critical increase in noise. A non-nuclear boat needs to deliver fuel to the combat service area, an atomic one does not need to – a nuclear submarine is not tied to nearby bases or to fuel, and it can operate disproportionately more freely than a diesel-electric one, even with an air-independent power plant.

In combat, a nuclear submarine also has a lot of advantages, up to the possibility of sometimes getting away from the enemy’s torpedo by running. For a hypothetical Australian-French non-nuclear submarine, this would be impossible. The hydroacoustic complex on the ‘Virginias’ is generally difficult to compare with something, and this is the range of target detection and the range of shooting at it.

Now China, in addition to measures to counter the submarine fleet of the United States and Great Britain, will also have to take into account Australia, which wants to get a nuclear submarine more powerful than anything that China has at present.

What does the battlefield look like in numbers? If we start from how many of the ‘Virginias’ are already built and under construction to go into service by 2036, when the Australians want to get their eight submarines, then we can assume that there will be about 20 units. And they will not be able to throw everything at China; some of the submarines will be needed in case of emergency operations against Russia.

Thus, an additional eight Australian submarines will increase the number of units opposing China by at least a third, compared only with American submarines. This is even more than the British will be able to give for the war with China. China will have to increase both the submarine and other fleet forces by a comparable number.

In general, for China, these eight additional enemy submarines are a fresh handful of bones in the throat. That’s about what the Americans planned to do with the British. That’s what eight nuclear submarines are.

This is what caused the reaction of the Chinese to the news. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the transfer of nuclear submarine construction technologies to Australia harms the nuclear non-proliferation regime and ‘exacerbates the arms race’, as well as the fact that the United States and Great Britain ‘extremely irresponsibly’ apply double standards. These admonitions, of course, will not have any effect.

And what does this mean for Russia? If Australia wants to have eight multi-purpose submarines by 2036, then by that year we will ideally have four Yasen-class vesselsin the Pacific Ocean – the ‘Novosibirsk’, ‘Krasnoyarsk’, ‘Vladivostok’ and, presumably, the ‘Perm’.

(...) Is it possible for the Australians to meet the deadlines? Yes, but only in an “expansive’ way – laying more submarines a year than the Americans. And this requires, firstly, shipyards in sufficient quantity to build submarines;  secondly, workers and engineers;  and thirdly, the supply of components from the United States, which can become the bottleneck of the project because of the existing crisis in American shipbuilding. Does Australia have all this in the right amount? The allies will not be able to help them there;  they do not have enough themselves.

(...) In general, it is possible to make Australia a country with a nuclear submarine fleet quickly. Moreover, the authors of this initiative have an extremely serious reason for all this. Such gigantic investments and sharp political turns are not carried out just like that. The hegemony of the Anglo-Saxons in the world is seriously shaken, both because of their own internal weakness, and because of the growth of China, and the sabotage of their system of power by Russia. It is quite obvious they will not give up their power over humanity and the benefits resulting from this in a favourable fashion.

It is worth recognizing that the world is on the verge of war. Australia’s agreement with the United States and Britain says exactly this. An ordinary world war with tens of millions of dead, as one option, or with hundreds of millions; after all, no one has canceled nuclear weapons. Such a war is almost inevitable.

Moreover, knowing what deadlines the ‘partners’ set for themselves, you can roughly understand the time for which they are preparing the ‘hot phase’. And looking at how other countries are preparing for the next world war, it’s time for us to take a critical, honest and non-biased look at how we are preparing for it.”
